How can Pregnancy effect your Feet

As if you didn't have enough to deal with when you are pregnant, many women find that they suffer from hot, swollen or aching feet (or any combination of all three). This may be due to the extra weight you are now carrying or simply a result of those raging hormones that seem to be taking over your life.

What to look for in a shoe During Pregnancy

It is so disheartening when you go to put on your favourite shoes and find that they simply will not go anywhere near your now huge feet. Although this is a temporary problem, you need to make sure that your shoes are making you feel as healthy as possible to avoid the misery of painful feet. Choose a shoe that will expand with your feet and try to avoid wearing tight fitting shoes, especially if you are on your feet all day. At Cheerful Soles we advocate wearing comfortable shoes that fit you at all times and whilst you are pregnant is no different.

The check list below has been developed to help you find a pair of shoes that you are happy with and are also healthy for your feet. Depending on the style of shoe you want, you may focus on all or most of them.

  • Know your shoe size, sounds like common sense but when was the last time you had yours measured?
  • Make sure that the shoes you are buying will be wide enough for your feet, If you generally have problems finding shoes that are wide enough then it may be worth getting them measured in person at a reputable shoe shop.
  • Wear shoes that have been designed so that you can adjust the width. Look for fastenings such as velcro and lases that come as far to the toe end of the shoe as possible.
  • If you are also suffering from Arch Pain and have been advised to wear an insole or other orthotic insert then take this into account. Look for a shoe with a removable insert or one that is deep enough to accommodate yours
  • If the weather permits wear sandals as these will allow your feet and toes to spread naturally.
  • Whether you are working on your feet all day, hiking or taking part in sport, make sure your footwear is appropriate to that activity
  • Think about the material that your shoe is made of, avoid synthetic and hard materials and opt for a natural soft leather or alternative that will allow your feet to breath naturally
  • For the ladies, choose a firm and low heeled shoe

Women tend to have a harder time with good posture the further along the pregnancy gets. During the second trimester, a woman’s blood flow is going more towards the baby. Because of this, it is easier for a woman to get light headed and dizzy. The extra weight gain in such a short amount of time can also cause her feet to swell. Shoes can play a major role for helping pregnant women keep good posture, retain balance, and keep their feet comfortable. It is important to have the right kind of shoes though. When you are looking for shoes as a pregnant woman, you should be aware of the shoe type. You need shoes with:

  • ~Good arch support
  • ~Flat heels
  • ~Uppers that allow your foot to breathe and won’t trap moisture
  • ~Slip on shoes
  • ~Wider shoes. (for swelling.)

Here is a small list of shoes that are best suited for pregnant women.

Loafers
These are shoes that are good for running errands or even work. Pregnant women will be more comfortable walking around in these types of shoes.
Sandals
Pregnant women may like the convenience of slipping on shoes like sandals. They allow your feet to breathe, and most of the time, you don’t have to tie anything.
Clogs
Clogs are known for being very comfortable. For pregnant women, this is especially important. Clog shoes usually absorb water or moisture in a non destructive way. They are easy to clean and lightweight. Pregnant women love how low maintenance they are.
Nice dress shoes
Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice nice nights out. In fact, women tend to have more nice nights out while they are pregnant then when they are not. Do yourself a favor and make sure you buy some flat, comfortable shoes that are of a nice dress nature.
Trainers
Some pregnant women may have a harder time than others when it comes to shoes like trainers. These types of shoes require bending or leaning over to tie them. However, trainers do tend to be very comfortable to pregnant women, and they are inexpensive. However, pregnant women must be careful with trainers the further along they get in their pregnancy. Some trainers do not offer the support necessary for pregnant women.
This is just a small list of shoes that pregnant women can wear. Some women may have a harder time with these shoes than others. Just make sure to wear what is appropriate for arch, support, and comfort.
