What are Calluses

A Callus is an area of skin that has become hardened due to pressure from another surface, such as a shoe, on a regular basis. This thickening is the natural way for healthy skin to protect itself from unnatural stress. If a callus develops on your foot it is usually due to wearing shoes that don't fit. If you have calluses on the sole of your foot it could be down to a lot physical activity such as running, impact sports and walking or down to uneven weight distribution when you walk and stand.

Calluses start off as areas of red skin that overtime, due to continual rubbing, become harder and can appear yellowish. A callus can become less painful over time, as the skin hardens. Shoes that once did did fit and didn't rub are now uncomfortable and hard to wear.

What to look for in a shoe if you have Calluses

As calluses are often a result of wearing shoes that simply don't fit, it really is important to wear shoes that do. Continuing to wear shoes that are tight fitting , high heeled, narrow or shallow, even if you have had a callus removed may lead to it developing again.

The check list below has been developed to help you find a pair of shoes that you are happy with and are also healthy for your feet. Depending on the style of shoe you want, you may focus on all or most of them.

  • Know your shoe size, sounds like common sense but when was the last time you had yours measured?
  • Make sure that the shoes you are buying will be wide enough for your feet, If you generally have problems finding shoes that are wide enough then it may be worth getting them measured in person at a reputable shoe shop.
  • If you wear padding on your callus, measure you feet with this on
  • Whether you are working on your feet all day, hiking or taking part in sport, make sure your footwear is appropriate to that activity
  • Think about the material that your shoe is made of, avoid synthetic and hard materials and opt for a natural soft leather or alternative that will let your feet to breath naturally
  • If you wear heels try to opt for a low firm heel if you are wearing them for long periods
  • If your callus is on the side of your foot near your toes or ball of your feet, look for a wider shoe, or a shoe that will allow you to adjust the width
